<p><em>Learning is one of the biggest stumbling blocks we have with eating and diabetes.</em></p>
<p>By learning when you should eat, how much you need to eat and what to eat, you can  take excellent care of yourself.   When making food choices, choose wisely so that you can lose unnecessary weight, lower you risk of diabetes complications and even feel good from day to day.</p>
<p>Our goal with diabetes is to keep our blood glucose levels at healthy levels and to prevent damage to our body caused by those unhealthy levels of glucose, cholesterol and blood pressures.  This can be maintained with good eating and physical activity habits along with proper medications if prescribed by your health care professional.</p>
<p>When taking diabetes medications, it is best to follow schedules for physical activity, meals and snacks.  Some medications allow for flexible schedules while others do not.  Discuss your diet and medication routines with your doctor.</p>
<p>The risk of developing heart disease is two times that in people who have diabetes than in people who do not.  High cholesterol levels raise that risk.  Lowering the amounts of saturated fats and cholesterol and maintaining optimal body weight can help lower cholesterol levels in the blood and reduce your risk of heart disease. <strong>Eating and Diabetes</strong> definitely go hand in hand here.</p>
<p>With you doctors help and with monitoring results:</p>
<ul>
<li>Determine how many times you need to eat per day</li>
<li>Determine how many snacks you can eat per day</li>
<li>Determine your physical activity levels required to maintain</li>
</ul>
<p>Remember that conditions can change as time goes by, never stop monitoring and never stop working with your health care professionals.  Keep up with your <em>diet and diabetes</em> plans and follow them with care.</p>
<p>It is your life and you should make it as comfortable and as productive as you can.  You can always take medications, but there is no substitute for self care.</p>

<p>People with diabetes that like to get out, exercise and be active are always on the go.  This is absolutely one of the best ways to help people without diabetes or with pre-diabetes prevent it.  It is also a good way for those with diabetes to control it and help prevent complications.</p>
<p>The best advice I can give anyone, especially with diabetes, is to move.  One of the worst things you can do to yourself is to be inactive.</p>
<p><strong> Motion, Activity, Exercise and Diabetes – What to Know</strong></p>
<p>Always consult your physician before making drastic changes in your lifestyle.</p>
<p>If an exercise program is new to you, or it has been a long period of time since you exercised on a regular basis, discuss this with your doctor and get blood sugar levels that you need to target, high or low during the duration of your active exercise sessions.</p>
<p>As a diabetic, you should get at least 30 to 60 minutes of physical activity at least most days of the week.  This activity along with a healthy diet will help to keep your weight down, lower your blood sugar levels and help lower your risk of heart problems.</p>
<p>Doctors will generally recommend aerobic type exercises for diabetics.  Aerobic exercise makes you breathe deeply and also makes your heart work harder.</p>
<p>Some good examples of aerobic exercise are:<br />
walking<br />
jogging<br />
aerobic dance<br />
bicycling</p>
<p>Whatever type of exercise you choose, always warm up for 5 to 10 minutes first and cool down when you are done.  A good way to warm up is to do gentle walking or stretching.  You should always stretch for 5 to 10 minutes before and after your exercise sessions.</p>
<p>As exercise tends to lower your blood sugar level, it is always a good idea to check your levels before you start and when you get done.  If you are exercising for extended periods, check you blood sugar levels every 30 minutes or so.  Hyperglycemia is low blood sugar and is dangerous.  If your sugar levels are to low, wait until they are at a normal level before you start.  If you begin to feel changes in your heartbeat, sudden sweat, shaky, anxious or sudden hunger, you blood sugar level is most likely dropping to low.  Stop exercising and follow the plan you and your doctor made for combating hyperglycemia.  Keep a snack handy!</p>
<p>Always wear shoes that fit properly.  Do every thing you can to prevent sores and/or blisters on your feet.  As diabetics tend to heal slowly, infections can easily set in.</p>
<p>Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after your exercise sessions.  Dehydration can affect your blood sugar levels.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Who is at risk for getting autoimmune diseases? </strong>There are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases and new treatments for autoimmune diseases are being studied all the time and can affect many parts of the body.  Women tend to be affected more often by autoimmune disorders; nearly 79% of autoimmune disease patients in the USA are women.  It is not known why this is the case, although hormone levels have been shown to affect the severity of some autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. These diseases can affect connective tissue in your body (the tissue which binds together body tissues and organs).  Autoimmune diseases can be broadly divided into systemic and organ-specific or localized autoimmune disorders, depending on the principal clinic-pathologic features of each disease.  Autoimmune disorders are diseases caused by the body producing an inappropriate immune response against its own tissues.  Autoimmune disorders fall into two general types: those that damage many organs (systemic autoimmune diseases) and those where only a single organ or tissue is directly damaged by the autoimmune process (localized).</p>
<p><strong>Autoimmune diseases:</strong> A group of disorders in which the primary cause is the anti inflammatory reaction caused by the bodies own <a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/immune+system" rel="tag">immune system</a>  attacking tissues.  Autoimmune diseases tend to cluster in families and in individuals (a person with one autoimmune disease is more likely to get another), which indicates that common mechanisms are involved in disease susceptibility.  Autoimmunity is not contagious, but the genes a child inherits from parents can influence whether a child will develop autoimmune conditions.  In autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, scleroderma, pernicious anemia, myasthenia gravis, and Hashimoto's disease, specific cells uncontrollably attack the body's own tissues.  Approximately 75 percent of autoimmune diseases occur in women, most frequently during the childbearing years and do not spread to other people like infections. Women have fatigue, stiffness and weakness when suffering from a autoimmune disease. There is a higher incidence of autoimmune diseases is seen in winter months as people stay indoors and the air is dry, stale &amp; exposure to viruses indoor.</p>
<p>Autoimmune diseases are workable in day to day activities to make you feel better. First, eat a healthy diet.  Give your immune system a boost and be as healthy as you can be!  The list of nutrients that you need for a healthy immune system is long.  The body is made up largely of proteins, so its health depends upon its freedom from damage (as through oxidation or glycation) and upon its timely removal as part of normal protein turnover.  Always consult your own doctor if you are in any way concerned about your health.</p>
<p>Your body's <a href="http://blogs.icerocket.com/tag/immune+system" rel="tag">immune system</a> protects you from disease and infection. One of the ways your immune system rebuilds itself is through sleeping and is a great way you can help both your body and mind.  Rest allows your body tissues and joints the time they need to repair.  The immune system is the body's most specialized defense mechanism.  In a healthy body, circulating antibodies attack and destroy pathogenic invaders.  The goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms and control the autoimmune process while maintaining the body's ability to fight disease.  Most patients need supplements to replenish a hormone or vitamin that the body is lacking.  The body's antioxidant system and other lines of defense cannot completely protect proteins.  Nature's second line of defense is the body's system for repairing or removing damaged proteins.  While some protein repair mechanisms exist, it is difficult for the body to repair most protein damage.  It can be compared to a piece of metal rusting and results from the action of damaging molecules known as free radicals that are a natural byproduct of the body's metabolism.</p>
<p>It has also been suggested that the slight exchange of cells between mothers and their children during pregnancy may induce autoimmunity.  Overexposure to pesticides and toxins may also induce autoimmunity. Your immune system can be boosted by changes made in eating and exercise routines.</p>
<p>Nutritionists recommend a diet high in fresh vegetables and fruit, whole grains, brown rice, low-fat dairy products, fish and poultry.  <strong>Nutrition and nutritional status can have profound effects on immune functions, resistance to infection and autoimmunity in humans.</strong> Alternative treatments including natural medicine and nutritional therapy have been shown to have an impact on the activity of the disease.  As patients with scleroderma sometimes develop gastrointestinal problems and are needed intravenous nutrition of long duration, they should be paid attention to lack of trace elements that can be a cause of hematologic complications.</p>
<p>What we come back to is that we need to take care of our health in every way possible. Anybody can take supplements whether you are sick or not and good nutrition is a necessity for every human being on this earth!</p>

<p><strong>Desirable blood glucose levels?</strong></p>
<p>Everyone has some glucose in their blood. People who don&#8217;t have diabetes have a normal range of about 70 to 120. Blood glucose levels will go up after eating but return to the normal range 1 to 2 hours later.</p>
<p>Always ask your doctor when you should check your blood glucose with a meter. Find out whether the  targets listed below are best for you or not. Then you and your doctor can set your personal targets.</p>
<p><strong>BGL (blood glucose targets) for most people with diabetes:</strong><br />
Before meals should range between 90 to 130 and 1 to 2 hours after the start of a meal should be less than 180.</p>
<p>Find out what your target BGL&#8217;s should be, document them and know them.</p>
<p>My suggestion to anyone with continuous blood glucose level numbers outside of your care teams designated numbers, GO see your doctor!</p>

<p>Arthritis means inflammation of a joint or joints.  Arthritis is usually caused by what people eat and drink and is becoming very common in people of all ages which will probably affect 90% of people by the age of 60.  Arthritis is a poorly understood condition but some scientists believe that rheumatoid arthritis is the result of a micro-organism or other foreign substance in the body.  Arthritis is the general name for a group of more than 100 diseases and becomes more prevalent as we age.  Arthritis is one of the most common chronic  conditions today, affecting as many as 100 million people worldwide.  Can the foods you eat cause or affect your arthritis?  Diet is a major role player in the onset of arthritis.  There are some scientific reasons to think that the foods you eat could affect certain kinds of arthritis.</p>

<p>While women's role in the food chain is essential to produce that all-important resource, food, it paradoxically does not guarantee women even minimum levels of nutrition.  Women are often responsible for producing and preparing food for the household, so their knowledge — or lack thereof — about nutrition can affect the health and nutritional status of the entire family.  Women with adequate stores of iron and other micronutrients are less likely to suffer fatal infections and are more likely to survive bleeding during and after childbirth.  Women in developing countries are also regularly deficient in vitamin A, iodine, and energy.  Women of child-bearing age are recommended to take folic acid supplements and consume a folic-rich diet.  Women are also at higher risk for developing osteoporosis (50 percent of women compared to 25 percent of men are expected to develop it in their lifetimes) and need more calcium and Vitamin D to prevent it.  Studies showed that women with vitamin D insufficiency absorb less than 10 percent of available calcium.</p>

Ignorance about the symptoms of malnutrition, such as the lethargy and depression caused by iron deficiency, may be dismissed as &laquo;normal&raquo; or unimportant, further exacerbating the problem.  Addressing women's malnutrition has a range of positive effects because healthy women can fulfill their multiple roles — generating income, ensuring their families' nutrition, and having healthy children — more effectively and thereby help advance countries' socioeconomic development.  Mothers that are well nourished will have infants with healthy birth weights and less of a chance of malnutrition.  For reasons including women's reproductive biology, low social status, poverty, and lack of education, they suffer from nutritional imbalances.  After the first year of life adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition.</p>

Women with fears of weight gain or with eating disorders may choose to work with a health professional, to ensure that pregnancy does not trigger an eating disorder. </strong> Eating healthy salads will help you to control your weight and. there is a wealth of information available today that offers tips for eating well starting from the moment you get early pregnancy symptoms.  Healthy eating begins long before conception ever occurs.  Try eating starchy snacks, like toast, saltines, cheerios, or other dry cereals when you feel nauseated.  Some women find eating dry crackers before rising from bed in the morning helpful for nausea.  You'll need to avoid eating or drinking certain things during pregnancy, such as: certain types of fish, such as swordfish, canned tuna, and other fish that may be high in mercury (your doctor can help you decide which fish you can eat)foods that contain raw eggs, such as mousse or Caesar salad raw or undercooked meat and fish processed meats, such as hot dogs and deli meats , unpasteurized cheeses, such as feta, brie, blue, and goat cheese unpasteurized milk, juice, or cider.  Try eating frequent, small meals, and avoid greasy foods. At least in the later stages of pregnancy, she needs to consume more energy than usual, but this does not mean eating twice as much.  In general, eating a variety of fresh, whole (unprocessed) plant foods has proven hormonally and metabolically favorable compared to eating a monotonous diet based on processed foods.</p>
<p><strong>March of Dimes recommends women consider a supplement of 400 micrograms of folic acid preconceptually to prevent the incidence of neural tube defects. </strong> If increased weight gain is recommended, an emphasis should be placed on high-calorie food group items that contain a higher fat and sugar content.  Your diet has to include iron as a supplement, because it's recommended requirement cannot be met during pregnancy.  Thirty milligrams of ferrous iron is recommended, and iron should be taken on an empty stomach.  Calcium supplements, if recommended, should be taken with meals.   When the development of major organs begins during early pregnancy, often before a woman starts prenatal care or realizes that she is pregnant, preconception care is recommended for every woman of reproductive age.</p>
<p>The most natural and pleasurable part of having a baby is the conception, but also stressful. As your body adjusts to the growing baby, you may have nausea, fatigue, backaches, mood swings, and stress.  A stress free pregnancy is one of the greatest gifts that you can give your new baby and more rest is needed as the woman copes with the added stress of extra weight.  During pregnancy, the aches and stress can be reduced with a simple massage.  Relaxation techniques can be used to cope with such conditions as stress or morning sickness. Finally, mood swings and stress are common symptoms reported by many women in the early stages of pregnancy. The following herbs are recommended for pregnant women: An all-purpose remedy is red raspberry leaf tea.</p>
<p>There are seven main classes of nutrients that the body needs: minerals, fiber, water,along with carbohydrates, proteins, fats and vitamins.  Most people think of nutrition as optional if they are taking prenatal vitamins, but the fact remains that prenatal vitamins are a supplement, think of them as your lifeguard.  A necessary staple for pregnancy are prenatal vitamins. Your doctor will want you to start taking prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid, calcium, and iron as soon as possible. These vitamins and minerals help ensure the baby's and mother's health as well as prevent some types of birth defects. A change in prenatal vitamins can alleviate nausea in some cases. A good night's rest,eat well,moderate exercise and your prenatal vitamins are a must. However your odd food cravings may not be as strong if you are taking your prenatal vitamins and fish oil capsules. The importance of pre-natal vitamins and fish oil capsules, your doctor will tell you; that if you are trying to conceive, or you believe you may be experiencing early pregnancy symptoms, you should be taking daily pre-natal vitamins.</p>
<p>It is important that the mother's diet contains sufficient protein, iron, calcium, folic acid, and vitamins C and D for the formation of the baby's muscles, bones, and teeth, and to make hemoglobin. Supplementary iron and vitamins C and D are often recommended, but iron tablets can cause constipation and other distressing effects in some people.  Heating techniques may also reduce food's content of many heat-labile nutrients such as certain vitamins and phytochemicals, and possibly other yet to be discovered substances.  Nonetheless, processed foods tend to have an inferior nutritional profile than do whole, fresh foods, regarding content of sugar and high GI starches, potassium/sodium, vitamins, fiber, and of intact, unutilized (essential) fatty acids.  According to the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO: 1996), more than starvation the real challenge in developing nations today is malnutrition-the deficiency of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids) that no longer allows the body to ensure growth and maintain its vital functions.</p>
